Iceland

In January we went on an adventure to Iceland, wow what a place! I took my sketchbook, camera kit (and thermals of course) and we slowly explored the west and south coast. We largely stayed in a different place each night, which was fab, and met some lovely locals along the way.

Because we were there in the winter the interior was closed, but the main roads that we needed mostly remained open. We hired a 4x4, which turned out to be a great idea - the tyres had wee metal spikes to help grip the road when conditions got a little hairy! A lot of our exploring was off the tourist track, which we prefer, but we did really enjoy some of the tourist highlights too and so glad we included those into our itinerary.

I filled a whole sketchbook with drawings of places we had been and drew maps of our route each day. It is such a stunning place, with very impressive mountain and waterfall views, that we would definitely like to go back. Perhaps next time in summer when we can get up into the big mountains.

My Iceland sketchbook will be on show in my temporary SpringFling studio at Threave Garden and Estate, near Castle Douglas. I'm planning to work up some illustrations from my sketchbook later in the year, so keep an eye on my newsroom to see how I'm getting on.
